Why every public safety agency needs to add satellite communication as a tool

The Wiscomm team has been working over the past few weeks on bring on Globalstar as our newest partner in our expanding communications portfolio. Much like a frying pan to the side of the head we never realized how important satellite communication would turn out to be (more later in this post).

Globalstar, with the recent launch of its final batch of second generation of satellites is positioned as the first mobile satellite services provider to complete the deployment of a second-generation constellation of low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. This new generation of satellites allows for superior voice quality (no delay), easy dialing (your choice of phone numbers in Alaska, Florida, Texas or Puerto Rico), competitively priced hardware and airtime along with a wide selection of data products. Most importantly COVERAGE, where you need it, when you need it!

We will go into further detail in a future post but Globalstar offers annual service plans starting at just $300 per year. The new Globalstar GSP-1700 features 4 hours of talktime and incredible 36 hours of standby time, all in a compact easy to use form factor. Along with many permanent mounting options or portable carry kits available.

Now back to the interesting times we live in, the talk around the office during the recent events in the Boston area was why public safety agencies and fire departments are relying on commercial mobile phone providers in times of disasters. And how frustrating that must have been searching for a phone signal while competing with Joe Public downloading a YouTube video. This must have been incredibly difficult for these agencies trying to have discrete, secure communications with colleagues and dispatch during these trying times.

We invite you to learn more about Globalstar and how satellite communication can be a cost-effective solution to your disaster plan. Wiscomm is ready to walk you through this process and answer any questions you have. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
