2011, a Wiscomm year-end review

We have made it a tradition to write these year-end summaries and hopefully chronicle and excite our incredibly loyal customer base we have been blessed to grow over the past few years. This year has been nothing less then phenomenal, we all have read how the economy has continued to languish worldwide, that makes us especially proud to highlight our nearly a 50% year-over-year sales growth.

This unprecedented sales growth come from a number of factors. First has to be our no nonsense sales approach, this along with our new web store launch, the continued growth of our new radios sales with awesome partners like Blackbox and Titan Radios, a very healthy flow of our used radio sales and the addition of supporting product lines like our Astron Power Supplies, E/M-Wave Antenna Line and our private label programming cables.

Looking forward to 2012 we have a number of initiatives planned, here is sneak peek of our plans:
  • The addition of our private label "Wiscomm" brand of remote speaker microphones and audio accessories.
  • A launch of a business-line with the focus on the communication needs of the hospitality industry.
  • Adding two or three more new radio lines.
  • New, dedicated online stores for our programming cable and battery business.
  • Expanded customer phone hours, we currently staff our phone lines from 9:00am to 3:00pm Central US time, while we offer email support from 7am-11pm Central US time.
  • The addition of 2-3 sales associates serving the needs of our Wisconsin public safety clients and our nationwide hospitality clients.
  • Expanding our Military and Federal Government sales team.
  • A host of infrastructure improvements that will speed the processing of orders.
We can't finish the year without thanking our partners at Motorola Solutions. As mentioned in previous posts, we work with a core group of "Motorolans" that are really top notch, they help guide us through the minefield and "bomb-throwers", to that the Wiscomm team is truly grateful. Our growth has challenged our competition to rethink their business strategies and adapt, we think that is good for both Motorola and the communication industry as a whole. Business is changing, the communication industry is definitely changing and most importantly the funding platform to support public safety is changing, everyone must embrace and adapt.

This is an incredibly difficult business, heck all small business is hard. Harder then those who have never launched a small business will ever know. While we often get pulled in all different directions, one thing we always must remember is the customer. If there is ever anything we can do for you, please contact us personally, we remember who built this company.

Humbly,

Motorola releases details about APX XE Remote Speaker Mic

We have gotten tremendous response on the announcement of Motorola's new Remote Speaker Microphone for the increasingly popular APX series radio. Motorola has just sent over some additional details on the new APX XE RSM - NNTN8203.
  • XE RSM Target List Price between $275 - $300 USD.
  • XE RSM requires APX Radio R7.11.5 firmware (December 2011 time frame).
  • XE RSM will work with all APX Portable Radios.
  • XE RSM only comes in High Impact Green color housing, no Black or Yellow.
  • XE RSM does not have a control channel knob on top of the mic.
  • XE RSM does not have a Secondary Audio Accessory connector.
  • XE RSM does not have a Display.
  • XE RSM will not be orderable until Dec 2011 timeframe. (NOT SHIPPING TILL Q1 2012)
We are expecting huge demand for this microphone as we are seeing a ton of APX portables entering the field lately and expect that number to grow in 2012 with the anticipated sunset of the XTS series. We will be announcing how we will be handling the waiting list for this product, likely in November. Based on past product launches this will likely be quite difficult to procure through 2012.

We're Number One!

We are normally not ones who toot our horn and my nature like to live below the radar, however we have just received some news that puts a smile on our humble faces from ear to ear.

Our good friends from the glass tower in Schaumburg called a few days ago to let us know we are now the largest Motorola "Independent Parts, Batteries and Accessories Reseller" in the United States. Having accomplished this in what is well documented as very challenging business environment is what really gives us hope as what we can do once we break out of this worldwide economic funk.

Motorola has truly been an excellent partner to work with as we grow and develop our business, we have learned to navigate phone trees and hierarchy of working with the largest communications supplier in the world. The handful of Motorola crew we work with have a genuine desire for us to succeed.

We are working on several new initiatives still to launch later this year we truly believe the best is yet to come, we believe in the Motorola product and are looking forward to some exciting announcements with them soon.

Thanks to our loyal customers, our goal has always been to make your buying experience as hassle free as possible, if you see something that needs to be changed or an easier way to do something simply let us know, you are a partner in our business and we are here for you.

Sincerely,
Craig & Mark

Questions about Basic & Detailed Service Manuals?

One of the most common questions we get around here is about service manuals. "What is the difference between Basic and Advanced Motorola Service Manuals"?

First of all we advise most of our customers who operate any kind of fleet of a particular model of radio to invest in the "Basic Service Manual (BSM)", The BSM includes information about the various sub-models to your radio with clear model numbers, they also include step-by-step descriptions on how to disassemble, repair most common problems and reassemble the radio. The BSM also provides a parts listing of most non-electrical components, this is crucial when trying to reorder parts. Along with the parts listing it also includes a comprehensive list of batteries and accessories for your specific model radio.

The "Detailed Service Manual (DSM)" features the electrical breakdowns and technical service procedures for servicing your Motorola radio. These manuals are usually quite large in size (some weighing upwards of 10 pounds) and unless you are a certified technician likely over your head, plus with the complexity and relatively low cost of Depot repairs the information you can gleen from the DSM will still not likely help the process. We rarely need to reference the DSM manuals on a regular basis.

So our rule of thumb is if you have more then a handful of radios in your business and agency you should really invest the $20-$50 in the Basic Service Manual.

We carry most of the manuals for current and slightly older Motorola radios in our store. If you are looking for a manual not list, simply drop us a note and we will see what is available.

Wiscomm adds Alinco Amateur Radios to it's winning line-up

With the recent addition of public safety scanners from GRE America to our product line-up, we have been offered the added product line of Alinco Amateur Radios. We have used Alinco radios for our amateur radio hobby for over twenty years, we have always been impressed with the value they offer in both mobile and handheld radios to the Amateur community. We jumped at the chance to add them as many of our public safety clients also are long time amateur radio operators.

Alinco offers a wide variety of radios starting at $109.00 for the 2-meter VHF DJ-175T. The popular DJ-V line offers water resistant single band portables for under $200. Our favorite is the top-of-the-line DR-635T Dual Band Mobile, anyone who's about this radio can attest to how versatile this radio is.

We will be adding additional inventory in the coming weeks, if we are missing anything please just drop us an email and we can quickly add to the store.

Need a great scanner? GRE America joins with Wiscomm

The best announcement of the week has to be the news that GRE America has joined with Wiscomm to offer the best scanners available on the market today. GRE America has been a manufacturer of scanners for Radio Shack for 40 years and continue to do so, a few years ago they rolled out the very successful PSR series of scanners.

They feature two flagship products, the first being the PSR-600 Mobile / Base Scanner that will scan just about every radio system on the market including P25 Digital systems. Excellent build quality, excellent receiver and loud audio make this unit the perfect companion to your public safety monitoring post.

The second product is the newest addition to the GRE family, the PSR-800 portable scanner provides the Complete USA and Canada Database On a MicroSD Card and incredibly easy to use controls that the most entry level user can program and use. Much like the PSR-600 this scanner covers most every type and size system in the US.

We will be carrying the entire line of GRE scanners starting at $89, we have scoured the competition and feel we have some of the most competitive pricing around. See the difference GRE Scanners offer!

Wiscomm partners with EM Wave Inc to provide unique antenna solutions.

Wiscomm is happy to partner with EM Wave Inc, a provider of engineered antenna solutions for Land Mobile radios. E/M Wave, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of its e/m-Flex™ Elastomeric Polymer Spring Line of VHF / UHF Mobile Antennas. New e/m-Flex™ Polymer Springs are low profile, durable, and engineered for robust mechanical flexibility, while providing high conductivity for reliable electrical performance. The resilient Poly Springs dampen typical duplex system noise that is often generated by conventional mechanically wound wire coil springs operating in the LMR VHF/UHF frequency bands.

E/M Wave's second unique product is the EM-MX Series antennas.  This distinct antenna series was designed with application versatility in mind; for VHF-UHF, Public Safety and even Cellular application if our Customer so desires. Elegantly designed and unobtrusive, the EM-MX Series antennas sport a small footprint for practical mounting on just about any surface local. Available in six different mechanical configurations featuring frequency coverage between 152-960 MHz. The whip is constructed of 300 Series Stainless Steel featuring elegant Black Chrome Plating for added conductivity and durability. Top this off with a Stylish high-impact, Dual Shot Xenoy™/TPV base, Dual Seal tenants for weatherproofing and 100 watts forward power handling and you have a friend on the road when ever and where ever you go mobile. And, don't forget this antenna provides for up to 10% more operational bandwidth than most other competing low-end Chrome Nut designs.

The mobile antenna market is a very competitive arena, we choose to work with E/M Wave based on their extensive engineering background and small company customer service. We will be adding local inventory to the Wiscomm warehouse in the coming weeks and look forward to expanding the reach of this great company. Motorola Battery Care & Tips

We get lots of questions asked about battery care of two-way radio batteries, Motorola put together a nice handout we will be including in future battery shipments from Wiscomm. We have also included a copy of that content below.

These battery tips will help you obtain optimized performance and a longer life cycle from your Motorola rechargeable battery.

1. Charge your new battery overnight before using it. This is referred to as INITIALIZING and will enable you to obtain maximum battery capacity.
a. Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride: 14-16 hours.
b. Lithium Ion/Polymer: 1 to 2 additional hours after the charger light turns green.

2. New Motorola impres batteries, when inserted into a Motorola impres charger, will indicate a calibration cycle by displaying a steady Yellow indication on the charge status indicator.  Allow this calibration process to complete by not removing the battery from the charger until it has completely charged and displays a steady green indication.

3. In order to minimize capacity loss and cycle life reduction, new, NON INITIALIZED batteries must be stored in well ventilated, cool and dry locations. Batteries stored in these conditions may be stored:
a. Nickel Cadmium up to 2 years.
b. Nickel Metal Hydride up to 18 months.
c. Lithium Ion/Polymer up to 18 months.

4. If used batteries are to be removed from service for extended periods (greater than 30 days) they should be discharged to about 50% of their capacity before storage in a cool, dry location.

5. Batteries which have been in storage for more than two months should be fully discharged and recharged.
a. Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride: 14-16 hours.
b. Lithium Ion/Polymer: 1 to 2 additional hours after the charger light turns green.

6. When using a Motorola rapid charger, leave the battery in the charger for an additional 1 to 2 hours after the steady green light appears. (Applies to non-impres batteries only.)

7. Do not leave your radio and fully-charged battery in the charger when not charging. Continuous charging will shorten battery life. (Do not use charger as a radio stand.)

8. Only charge a battery when it needs it. If it is not fully discharged, do not recharge it. We suggest that you carry a spare. This is the most cost effective solution for users requiring longer operating time.

9. Do not return fully charged non-impres batteries to the charger for an "extra boost." This action will significantly reduce cycle life. Repeated short cycle charging of non-impres batteries will shorten battery life. (Do not use charger as a radio stand for non-impres batteries.)

10. Stabilize batteries to room temperature (72ºF) before charging. Charging below 40ºF and above 104ºF will decrease cycle life.

These simple care instructions help protect your rechargeable batteries from extreme charging temperatures and enhance their performance and useful life.

If you have any questions on how to care or manage your battery inventory, please contact us today. We have implemented innovative programs for numerous public safety agencies.

Is your Motorola radio narrow-band ready?

We have been watching with amazement on how other dealers are scaring customers into buying new radios, and DIGITAL radios none the less to meet the upcoming January 1, 2013 deadline to be narrowband compliant.

Here is a listing of radios that are OK to narrowband:
Portables - Motorola P1225, HT1000, MT2000, MTS2000, JT1000, HT750, HT1250, EX500, EX600, XTS2500, XTS3000, XTS3500, XTS4000, XTS4250, XTS5000, CP110, CP125, CP150, CP185, CP200, PR400, PR860, MT1500.
Mobiles - Motorola M1225, Astro Spectra, CM200, CM300, PM400, CDM750, CDM1250, CDM1550, XTL1500, XTL2500, XTL5000, PM1500.

Here are some of the more popular radios that are NOT OK to narrowband:
Portables - Motorola P200, HT600, MT1000, GP300, GP350, P100, P110, SABER, SP50, HT50.
Mobiles - Motorola MaxTrac, MaraTrac, GM300, M100, M216, M208, SM50, Syntor, Spectra, Micor, Mitrek.

In a future post we will cover in plain English who this affect and who this does not affect. Please do not get yourself talked into scrapping a entire radio system for over priced digital system (the soonest a DIGITAL radio would be required is estimated at 2017, there is still substantial debate surrounding this technology).

Hopefully the above information helps, if you have any questions about your radio inventory, please do not hesitate to drop us an email or give us a call with your questions. We are happy to help, hype-free.
