One of the most common questions we get around here is about service manuals. "What is the difference between Basic and Advanced Motorola Service Manuals"?

First of all we advise most of our customers who operate any kind of fleet of a particular model of radio to invest in the "Basic Service Manual (BSM)", The BSM includes information about the various sub-models to your radio with clear model numbers, they also include step-by-step descriptions on how to disassemble, repair most common problems and reassemble the radio. The BSM also provides a parts listing of most non-electrical components, this is crucial when trying to reorder parts. Along with the parts listing it also includes a comprehensive list of batteries and accessories for your specific model radio.

The "Detailed Service Manual (DSM)" features the electrical breakdowns and technical service procedures for servicing your Motorola radio. These manuals are usually quite large in size (some weighing upwards of 10 pounds) and unless you are a certified technician likely over your head, plus with the complexity and relatively low cost of Depot repairs the information you can gleen from the DSM will still not likely help the process. We rarely need to reference the DSM manuals on a regular basis.

So our rule of thumb is if you have more then a handful of radios in your business and agency you should really invest the $20-$50 in the Basic Service Manual.

Motorola Minitor V Programming, Service and Parts now available from Wiscomm

We have seen an uptick in requests for Motorola Minitor V pagers. We are now pleased to offer the following services.

Programming:
$25 for first, $5 for each additional unit that is identical. This includes return shipping to any address in the USA.

Service:
Motorola does not offer any replacable parts for the the Minitor V radio, all must be done at the Motorola Depot. We are able to offer flat rate repair for just $90 each, this also includes return shipping to any address in the USA.

Wiscomm Two-Way Radio Install: 2010 Honda Element

Wiscomm just added a 2010 Honda Element EX for some in-town pick-up and deliveries, we recently partnered with Rob Sprader at "Emergency Lighting & Electronics, LLC" to properly install a few radios and antennas into this vehicle. Here is a brief summary of the installation and equipment involved.

Radio's installed: Motorola CDM 1550-LS+ UHF LTR Mobile Radio, Motorola CM300 VHF 32c Conventional Radio, Sprint HTC EVO.

Ground off body of vehicle, never direct to battery. Positive tap off main power supply. Split Loom Tubing on all wires, interior, exterior including all antenna feed lines.

Custom fabricated bracket, notched plastic on center console, affixed to floor with stainless steel screws.

Ignition sense relay, powers radio on only when vehicle is running. This can be changed to offer a programmable delay. Again, all wires have Split Loom Tubing for protection.

With much hesitation we must announce a price increase for our flat rate repair service on Motorola Two-Way Radios. Our new pricing takes affect on September 1st 2009:

Fees:
$80.00 Flat Rate -- most modern Motorola Portables / Mobiles, includes up to $10.00 in parts (any parts beyond $10.00 would be additional).

$7.00 to $10.00 Return Shipping

Most repairs are completed within one week.

Repair Procedure:

• Contact us via e-mail notifying us of the inbound units, we will provide a ship-to address at this time.
  
• For each radio, include note indicating problem/condition of each radio, rubber band note to each radio. This is an extremely important step, failure will cause delay or return of your radio.
• Properly package in bubble wrap the radio, at least one charged battery and antenna. No chargers should be required.
• Include your contact information including e-mail address.
• Ship to us using a trackable shipping method (FedEx, UPS, USPS Priority).
• If you fail to include contact information with your shipment, items will sit till contacted. We will not try to hunt you down trying to determine who's radios showed up on our dock in a plain brown box. Radios not claimed within 45 days will become property of Wiscomm and will be sold. Please make a point to include contact information or business card in your shipment.

SPRING CLEANING - Radios that is!

If there is one thing everyone on the staff at Wiscomm knows how to do, it's clean radios. We obviously get alot of radios through here, one of the first things every radio we get in gets a good cleaning. We often get asked what process end users should do to maintain there radio investment, we suggest a regular proper cleaning. Here are some tips and tricks we use on daily basis:

• We first pull all the accessories from the radio (antenna, battery, mics, belt clips) and put them on the side for a separate cleaning.
• Focusing on the radio itself, we remove all sticker and tape applied to the outside of the case (not the radio ID tags) using one of the following chemicals, either GooGone or WD-40.
• Once all labels/tape have been removed, we want to give the radios a good bath. Think of all the people who have been hacking, coughing and god knows what else then using this radio, this freaks us out and we need to disinfect the radio, really! We use a 50% dilution of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner Concentrate, liberally apply this mixture (without immersing radio) watching so not too much liquid gets into the speaker or microphone areas. After a short period of time we aggressively scrub unit using a stiff synthetic brush, then spraying units again with the cleaning mixture mentioned above. Using a clean cloth remove dry radio and removing any liquid paying particular attention to the speaker and microphone ports witch may require a quick puff of air remove any remaining liquid. At this point we like to give units a good spray of Lysol to kill and remaining germs and allow to air dry.
• After the thorough cleaning and disinfecting, we want to polish up these units. We like to use Pledge, liberally spray the Pledge on the radios (again you do not want to fill the speaker and microphone areas) and allow to sit on radios overnight if possible. The longer you let the Pledge sit on the radios the better they will and the longer it will maintain its shine.
• Repeat the above process for all the accessories (antennas, batteries, belt clips, microphones).
• Reassemble accessories and enjoy your new looking radios!
